“Learning History for the Better Future” - This project, pictorial milestones on fundamental science and technology based on “light & quantum information technology” is focused. Since these couple technologies have been serving to our society in many kinds of benefits and also playing an important role through education, R&D, and sustainable society. Therefore, both of them as the present world challenge, will be highlighted. Their developments and impact will be created in a simple form of timelines with attractive pictures. Resulting to the collection of up-to-date history, it will be used for the public learning and as a tool to inspire young people for building the better future society.
Firstly on light, its spectrum provides insights from the origin of the universe to recent technologies that have shaped our society till date. Light-based technologies involves in everyday lives since the history, and will continuously be the future key factor of the global development during both day & night time. Photonics-enabled industries are major economic drivers, and their applications have transformed society through, for examples, improved medicine or for the better health care, high speed & secure communications, lighting, and energy production. Specially, the successful operation of the laser in 1960 by Theodore Maiman is a perfect example of how it revolutionized those industries worldwide. Therefore, learning from history on “when & how” that light shaded to our society, should help people understand and motivate them to co-create the brighter future together.
Another nearby topic, quantum information technology (QuantumIT - computing, communication, metrology, and etc), is also highlighted. Since the history of quantum mechanics started in 1925, its applications have been widely adopted widely, and showing quite high impact on Quantum IT recently. A number of technology forecasts with national roadmaps have been announced. They have emphasized that future quantum based IT is indispensable. Major IT industrial players are involving in quantum computer, while cybersecurity products - quantum cryptography (QKD) have been released from a few startups. Moreover, an EU industrial standard on QKD and the IEEE P7130 for quantum computing have been released, including the founding of quantum centers worldwide. Among those vast quantum-based applications, this project focuses mainly on quantum computing and communication branches those closer to the people as a reason.
Because understanding this latter younger topic where a part of them also worked on light, is however highly difficult. Then, studying quantumIT along with the more familiar on older history of light by timetabling them in a dual or sister-tracks of “Light & QuantumIT” forming to a joint pictorial history is a promising method. Eventually in this proposed project, science and technology could be highlighted from the classical light through the modern era of simplified quantumIT.
