[ IEEE GCN - May 2026 issue ] -- In 2025, Thailand marked a significant historical milestone in its 150 years of telecommunications development. From the introduction of telegraphy in 1875 to today’s digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and the emerging quantum ICT era, this long trajectory reflects not only technological progress but also changing social priorities, policy frameworks, and national capabilities.To commemorate this sesquicentennial, the #ThaiTelecom150 initiative was organized as a year-long, multidisciplinary program, with active participation from various national partners. The anniversary was approached not as a ceremonial occasion but as an opportunity to critically revisit history, assess present challenges, and reflect on future directions for Thailand’s telecommunications ecosystem. The program officially commenced with honorary opening messages released on 29 January 2025, delivered by the Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity, representatives from the IEEE Asia-Pacific Region, members of the IEEE History Committee, and distinguished guests. These messages emphasized that understanding history is essential for navigating contemporary transitions driven by digitalization, AI, and advanced communications technologies.
Monthly invited talks were organized throughout the year, forming the core of the sesquicentennial activities. The program deliberately crossed disciplinary boundaries, bringing together engineers, historians, policymakers, educators, and industry practitioners. Several key moments anchored the year. In August, onsite activities were held during National Science Week, including a museum tour that linked telecommunications history with public science engagement. In November, special sessions with a mini-exhibition were featured at the IEEE Annual General Meeting on 29 November. The program concluded on 16 December 2025 with a closing ceremony under the theme “Learning History for a Better Future.”
In total, the initiative delivered fourteen Technical Talks, Seminars, and Workshops, along with three Professional and Career Development activities, including mini-Tea Talks and lectures. All sessions were recorded and made publicly available, including many AI-enhanced videos reviving 150 Years of Thai telecommunications heritage, ensuring long-term educational value beyond the anniversary year itself at www.quantum-thai.org/150th-thai-telecom-anniversary.
The Sesquicentennial of Thai Telecommunications served as a reminder of progress in communications. Each generation inherits both achievements and unresolved challenges. Learning seriously from the past remains essential as Thailand moves toward future transformations shaped by AI and quantum ICT.
